Oyuela v. Seacor Marine (Nigeria), Inc.
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana
290 F. Supp. 2d 713 (2003)
- Written by David Bloom, JD
Facts
Reynaldo Oyuela (plaintiff), a Honduran citizen, was injured while working as an engineer aboard an oil-field supply vessel off the Nigerian coast. Oyuela filed suit against SEACOR Marine (Bahamas) Inc. (SEACOR) (defendant), a foreign corporation that had corporate offices but owns no tangible assets, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Oyuela personally served Lenny Dantin, one of SEACOR’s corporate officers, at SEACOR’s offices in Morgan City, Louisiana. At the time of service, Dantin was voluntarily present in the forum, worked within the forum, and had lived there for several years. The district court held an evidentiary hearing to decide, among other issues, whether it had personal jurisdiction over SEACOR.
