Pell v. Procunier
United States Supreme Court
417 U.S. 817 (1974)
- Written by Megan Petersen, JD
Facts
The California Department of Corrections Manual prohibits press and other media interviews with specific individual inmates. Pell (plaintiff) represented three professional journalists who wished to interview a group of four California prison inmates. Pell brought suit in federal district court against Procunier (defendant), warden of the California Department of Corrections, to challenge the constitutionality of the prohibition. The district court did not grant relief for the journalists, and the journalists appealed to the United States Supreme Court.
