Philadelphia Taxi Association, Inc. v. Uber Technologies, Inc.
United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
886 F.3d 332 (3d Cir. 2018)
Facts
When Uber Technologies, Inc. (defendant), entered the Philadelphia market, it hired nearly 1,200 drivers away from existing taxicab companies. Philadelphia Taxi Association, Inc., and the 80 individual companies comprising it (plaintiffs) sued Uber, claiming it attempted to monopolize the Philadelphia taxicab industry in violation of antitrust laws. The trial court found the complaint failed to state a plausible claim of attempted monopoly and dismissed the case. The Philadelphia Taxicab Association appealed.
