Facts
Between 2002 and 2003, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo (defendant) was a military commander of the Mouvement de Libération du Congo (MLC). The MLC was a nonstate armed group active in the Central African Republic (backed by Uganda and active in the armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Prosecutors in the Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) charged Bemba Gombo in connection with two counts of crimes against humanity, namely rape and murder of civilians committed by the MLC.
