Ralston Purina Co.
Labor Arbitration
82 Lab. Arb. Rep. 983 (1984)

- Written by Miller Jozwiak, JD
Facts
Ralston Purina Company (Ralston) (defendant) reassigned inventory-control duties from Local 66 (union) (plaintiff) members to salaried individuals. The union filed a grievance, which requested that Ralston (1) cease the reassignments and (2) place any affected union members in their original positions. During the proceedings, but before the hearing on the merits of the grievance, the union sought to have a computer expert observe Ralston’s inventory-control processes. The union proposed doing so in the presence of Ralston and union representatives. Ralston declined the request, citing its desire not to expose its internal processes. Ralston offered to explain the processes instead. The union responded with a motion to compel production of the information.
