Revenue Ruling 2003-58
Internal Revenue Service
2003–22 I.R.B. 959 (2003)

Facts
A taxpayer with a leg injury used crutches as a mobility aid and bandages to cover torn skin. The taxpayer also took over-the-counter aspirin for pain as recommended by the taxpayer’s doctor. Additionally, the taxpayer suffered from diabetes and used blood-sugar-test kits to monitor sugar levels. None of these expenses were covered by insurance. The Internal Revenue Service issued a revenue ruling to clarify which, if any, of the expenses constituted deductible medical-care expenses under Internal Revenue Code § 213.
