Sakraida v. Ag Pro, Inc.
United States Supreme Court
425 U.S. 273, 96 S. Ct. 1532, 47 L. Ed. 2d 784 (1976)
- Written by Eric Miller, JD
Facts
Ag Pro, Inc. (plaintiff) held a patent on a water-flush system to remove cow manure from barn floors. The elements of the claimed invention included the storage of water in tanks or pools, the abrupt release of the water for faster draining, and the high-pressure application of water to the barn floor. The provision for abrupt release was the only element that did not appear in prior art. Ag Pro brought suit against Sakraida for infringement of the patent. The district court held that the patent was invalid on the ground of obviousness. The court of appeals reversed. The United States Supreme Court granted certiorari.
