Sheikh Asim Farooq v. Federation of Pakistan
Lahore High Court, Judicial Department
Writ Petition No. 192069 of 2018 (2019)
- Written by Abby Roughton, JD
Facts
The forests in Pakistan and Punjab were rapidly decreasing in size. Despite environmental treaties, laws, and policies requiring the Pakistani government (defendant) to protect and restore the forests, the government had not taken steps to protect the forests, planted new trees to remedy deforestation, or regulated the planting of trees to ensure that any trees planted were the best species for the environment in the relevant area. Sheikh Asim Farooq (plaintiff) brought a public-interest petition against the Pakistani government, seeking an order directing provincial and federal government entities to plant, protect, manage, preserve, and conserve the forests.
