Facts
In a Pennsylvania case tried in state court, the defense called Jonas Phillips as a witness. However, the trial was being held on a Saturday, and Phillips, a Jew, refused to testify on the Sabbath. The court fined Phillips, but ultimately excused payment when the defendant waived the testimony.
