State v. Anderson
Iowa Supreme Court
618 N.W.2d 369 (2000)
- Written by Kaitlin Pomeroy-Murphy, JD
Facts
Attorney Thomas Anderson (defendant) represented a man named Steve Schuemann. Unbeknownst to Anderson, Schuemann was an informant in an undercover narcotics investigation being handled by special agent Todd Jones. Schuemann disclosed to Jones that Anderson had accepted drugs as compensation for legal services. At Jones’s instruction, Schuemann told Anderson that Jones was a friend and drug dealer who was willing to pay part of Schuemann’s legal bill with drugs. Anderson and Jones met, and Anderson accepted cocaine as a form of payment. Anderson was charged with and convicted of soliciting a controlled substance. Anderson appealed.
