State v. French
Supreme Court of Minnesota
460 N.W.2d 2 (1990)
- Written by Rocco Sainato, JD
Facts
French (defendant) entered into a lease agreement with Susan Parsons (plaintiff) on February 22, 1988. Two days later, French discovered that Parsons intended to live in the leased residence with her fiancée. French is very religious, and cited his religious beliefs as the reason for his refusal to follow through with the lease agreement. Parsons brought an action against French alleging a violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination based on marital status. An administrative law judge ruled in favor of Parsons. French petitioned for certiorari to the Supreme Court of Minnesota.
