Facts
Bruce Johnson (defendant) was charged with murder, kidnapping, and assault and battery with the intent to commit rape of a 14-year-old girl. Johnson pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The jury found that Johnson was sane and convicted him. Johnson appealed. On appeal, the Rhode Island Supreme Court considered the issue of whether courts in Rhode Island would continue to apply the M'Naghten test or adopt a new test for determining a defendant's criminal responsibility.
