State v. Seekford
Utah Supreme Court
638 P.2d 525 (1981)
- Written by Craig Conway, LLM
Facts
Seekford (defendant) rented a vehicle in Utah and immediately traveled with friends to Las Vegas, Nevada, and then on to Arizona and Texas. When talk of returning the car arose, Seekford indicated that he would “handle it.” Thereafter when asked about returning the car, Seekford said he had “some friends who could make him some license plates.” Several months later, the vehicle was located and recovered. Seekford was charged with, and convicted of, theft, a second-degree felony in a Utah court. Seekford appealed, arguing that the Utah court lacked jurisdiction to try the matter.
