The Naulilaa Case (Port. v. F.R.G.)
Special Arbitral Tribunal, Judgment of 31 July 1928
2 Reports of International Arbitral Awards 1011 (2006)
- Written by Sean Carroll, JD
Facts
Due to a series of miscommunications in the Portuguese colony of Angola, including inadequate language translations and interpretations, Portuguese troops killed three members of a German delegation. In response, Germany attacked the Portuguese post of Naulilaa and other Portuguese posts in Angola, causing several casualties and severe property damage. Germany did not demand satisfaction for the killings of the three men prior to the attacks. Portugal established a special arbitral tribunal based on the Treaty of Versailles, seeking to hold Germany responsible for the attacks.
