The Thomas Jefferson
United States Supreme Court
23 U.S. (10 Wheat.) 428, 6 L.Ed. 358 (1825)

Facts
The Thomas Jefferson was a vessel that traveled from Shippingport, Kentucky, up the Missouri River and then back again. Shippingport was hundreds of miles from any coastal waters that were affected by the ebb and flow of the tide. A crew member (plaintiff) on the Thomas Jefferson brought a claim for wages alleged to have been earned on that voyage under admiralty jurisdiction in federal district court in Kentucky. The court dismissed the claim for lack of jurisdiction, and the crew member appealed to the United States Supreme Court.
