Thompson et al. v. The Catharina
United States Circuit Court for the District of Pennsylvania
23 Fed. Cas. 1028 (1795)
- Written by Joe Cox, JD
Facts
Thompson (plaintiff) was one of a group of seamen who had sailed on the ship The Catharina (defendant) and filed a suit to obtain wages. The Catharina was a foreign ship, and the ship’s owner was disputing Thompson’s claim for wages. No American law on point existed for the matter at hand, so the case’s central question was one of the authority to be considered by the court in ruling. Among the many foreign authorities considered were multiple bodies of law dating back to the ancient Roman codes.
