Thompson v. North American Stainless, LP
United States Supreme Court
562 U.S. 170, 131 S.Ct. 863 (2011)
- Written by Nan Futrell, JD
Facts
Eric Thompson (plaintiff) and his fiancée, Miriam Regalado, were both employed by North American Stainless, LP (NAS) (defendant). In February 2003, NAS was notified by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that Regalado had filed an EEOC claim alleging sex discrimination. Three weeks later, NAS fired Thompson. Thompson subsequently filed an EEOC claim and later sued NAS, alleging that NAS fired him in retaliation for Regalado’s EEOC charge. The United States Supreme Court ultimately granted Thompson’s petition for review to determine whether Thompson had standing to sue NAS under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), 42 U.S.C. § 2000e et seq.
