Facts
Jessie Thompson (plaintiff) filed an action in the District of Columbia against her husband, Charles Thompson (defendant) for assault and battery. The trial court dismissed the case on the ground that the District of Columbia’s Married Women’s Property Act did not authorize a married woman to sue her husband for tortious behavior. The matter was appealed.
