Tompkins v. Jackson
New York Supreme Court
880 N.Y.S.2d 876, 2009 WL 5213858 (2009)

- Written by Sean Carroll, JD
Facts
Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) (defendant) dated and had a child with Shaniqua Tompkins (plaintiff). The parties were not married but lived together sporadically. According to Tompkins, Jackson orally promised to take care of Tompkins for the rest of her life if he made it big in the entertainment industry. Tompkins stated that in return she promised to provide household services and raise the couple’s son. Tompkins did provide services to Jackson, including helping him financially before his record deal, aiding him back to health after he was shot, and raising their son. Ultimately, however, the parties had a falling out. Tompkins sued Jackson seeking to enforce his alleged oral promise. Jackson denied making the oral promise to Tompkins and filed a motion for summary judgment.
