United States v. Gallagher

Department of the Navy General Court-Martial
Ser N00/19UI000067 (2019)

Facts

United States Navy Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher (defendant) was charged with various violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice based on Gallagher’s alleged conduct while part of a naval special-warfare group serving in Iraq in 2017. Among other things, Gallagher was charged with premeditated murder based on Gallagher’s alleged stabbing of a wounded captive who was under Gallagher’s care. Gallagher was also charged with engaging in behavior that would discredit the armed forces based on Gallagher’s alleged posing for unofficial pictures with a corpse. Gallagher pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a trial was held before a general court-martial.
