United States v. Stelmokas
United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
100 F.3d 302 (1996), 520 U.S. 1241 (1997)
- Written by Peggy Chen, JD
Facts
Jonas Stelmokas was alleged to have been involved in Nazi activities during World War II and the government sought to revoke his U.S. citizenship. It was alleged that Stelmokas, born in Lithuania, was a voluntary member of Lithuania forces which assisted the Nazis in murdering Jews, and later served in the German Luftwaffe (the German air force). Stelmokas appealed from the judgment revoking his U.S. citizenship, on the ground that documents in evidence showing his Nazi activity were not properly authenticated. The government presented expert witnesses on the Holocaust at trial to testify as to the documents’ authenticity.
