Facts
York Obstetrics Gynecology, P.A. (York) (defendant) refused to provide Raymond McLaren with a sign-language interpreter when he accompanied his wife to York’s offices for prenatal visits. The government (plaintiff) brought suit against York on McLaren’s behalf, contending that York violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The jury ruled in favor of the government. Subsequently, the government requested that a monetary penalty be imposed against York in order to reimburse the government for its litigation expenses. The district court took the matter under advisement.
