Eleventh Amendment


An amendment to the Constitution of the United States that expressly prohibits federal courts from exercising jurisdiction over suits brought against a state by citizens of another state and that has been interpreted as prohibiting federal jurisdiction over most suits for equitable or monetary relief, even by a citizen of the defendant state, in the absence of the state’s consent to be sued.
