Definition

A personal immunity that shields senior or high-level state officials from foreign criminal jurisdiction for official and private acts committed while the officials are in office. Personal immunity prevents states from obstructing the official functions or infringing the sovereign rights of other states under the guise of adjudicating private acts. State officials lose immunity ratione personae after leaving office.
