Definition

A regional human-rights tribunal that interprets and applies the American Convention on Human Rights. Through its contentious function, the court assesses violations of the convention and monitors compliance with its judgments. The court has the authority to issue provisional measures if urgent injunctive relief is needed and has an advisory function. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is the treaty body that monitors compliance with the American Convention on Human Rights.
