International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
Definition
An ad hoc, meaning temporary, international criminal tribunal established by the United Nations Security Council to prosecute serious violations of international law and human rights abuses that occurred in the territory of the former Yugoslavia on or after 1991. The ICTY had primacy over any domestic or municipal court seeking to prosecute the same individual for the same crime and UN member states were required to cooperate with the ICTY’s investigations.
