Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (PURPA)

Definition

A federal statute intended to encourage electric-energy conservation, optimize the efficiency of electric utilities’ facilities and resources, and ensure equitable electricity rates for consumers. PURPA was enacted as part of the National Energy Act of 1978 in response to a nationwide energy crisis.
