Chamberlain v. Chamberlain
Minnesota Court of Appeals
615 N.W.2d 405 (2000)
- Written by Eric Miller, JD
Facts
Paul Chamberlain, an attorney, and Mary Chamberlain, a teacher, enjoyed an affluent lifestyle during their 30-year marriage. Paul and Mary later sought to dissolve the marriage. In the resulting proceeding, the district court determined that Mary’s financial need exceeded her salary and awarded her $2,400 per month in permanent maintenance, leaving the order open for possible modification in the future. Paul appealed, arguing that Mary commanded the top salary available to a teacher, that the dissolution already entitled her to a substantial property award, and that the court should not have taken the couple’s affluent lifestyle into consideration. The Minnesota Court of Appeals granted certiorari.
