Facts
G-Star Raw CV (G-Star) (plaintiff), a clothing company, held copyrights in its lines of jeans, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. G-Star brought suit against another clothing company, Cofemel—Sociedade de Vestuario SA (Cofemel) (defendant) in Portugal, alleging copyright infringement and unfair competition. The court found in favor of G-Star. Cofemel appealed to the Portuguese supreme court, which stayed proceedings and referred the matter to the European Union Court of Justice for a preliminary ruling.
