Facts
The state of New York (defendant) passed a law providing cash subsidies to private religious schools in reimbursement for expenses related to the administration of state mandated educational testing and reporting requirements. The Committee for Public Education and Religious Liberty (Committee) (plaintiff) filed suit in federal court to challenge the constitutionality of the law. The district court found that the law did not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Committee petitioned the United States Supreme Court for review.
