Ex Parte Slavin
Texas Supreme Court
412 S.W.2d 43 (1967)

Facts
Eugene Slavin (plaintiff) was married to Gloria Slavin. Upon their divorce, the trial court awarded custody of the three minor children to Gloria. The children were aged four, nine, and 14. The child-support decree ordered Eugene to pay $150 per month to support his three minor children until said children attained the age of 18. The order did not state whether Eugene must pay the $150 only until the oldest child reached 18 or until all three children turned 18. Eugene paid the $150 per month until one year after the oldest child turned 18 and then paid $100 per month. Because he stopped paying $150 per month, a judge held Eugene in contempt of court and ordered him jailed for three days. Eugene brought a habeas corpus petition arguing that he must be discharged from further child-support obligations because the child-support order was ambiguous. The Texas Supreme Court agreed to review the case.
