Golub v. Golub
New York Supreme Court
527 N.Y.S.2d 946 (1988)
- Written by Whitney Kamerzel , JD
Facts
Marisa Berenson (plaintiff) was married to Richard Golub (defendant). Berenson was a famous actress, and Golub was a celebrity lawyer. Berenson and Golub bought several rental properties together. Berenson split her time between the United States and Europe developing her career and becoming increasingly famous. During the time Berenson was overseas, Berenson and Golub’s children were taken care of by hired help. Golub supervised this hired help while Berenson was overseas, and he managed the rental properties. Berenson filed for and was granted a divorce. Golub asked the trial court to equitably distribute as community property the value of Berenson’s increased fame that resulted from his sacrifices and contributions. Berenson argued that her increased fame was not a professional license and Golub’s contributions were therefore not an investment that could be equitably distributed.
