Facts
Billy Little, Jr. (plaintiff) and Lisa Little (defendant) divorced in 1995. The Littles had two minor children. Billy served as a United States Air Force lieutenant and was ordered to pay $1,186 per month in child support. In 1996, Billy resigned from the air force and chose to enroll as a full-time student in law school. Billy petitioned the trial court to reduce his child-support obligation to $239 per month. The trial court found that Billy failed to show a substantial and continuing change of circumstances and denied Billy’s request. However, the court also found that because Lisa had acquired a higher paying job, it was appropriate to reduce Billy’s support obligation to $972 per month. Billy appealed the trial court’s order. The court of appeals found that the trial court abused its discretion in finding that Billy’s voluntary decision to cease employment with the air force and pursue a law degree was unreasonable. Lisa appealed.
