Facts
William Lorenz (defendant) and Pamela Lorenz (plaintiff) were married for 33 years. Ms. Lorenz filed a petition for divorce. At the time of the divorce, Mr. Lorenz's income was over $100,000, and Ms. Lorenz's income was $20,000. Mr. Lorenz was in good health, but Ms. Lorenz had back problems that affected her work as a hairdresser. The Supreme Court of New York, taking into account the couple’s standard of living prior to divorce, awarded Ms. Lorenz $500 per week in maintenance from Mr. Lorenz until such time as she could receive Social Security benefits. Mr. Lorenz appealed.
