Pratt v. Pratt
Virginia Court of Appeals
2011 WL 6412226 (2011)
- Written by Meredith Hamilton Alley, JD
Facts
David Pratt (plaintiff) owned a house in Springfield, Virginia. David later married Morgan Pratt (defendant), and the two lived in the Springfield house together. Morgan was a homemaker during much of the marriage, and she cleaned, decorated, and furnished the house. Morgan also gardened, made drapes, had the bedroom painted, and had modifications made to the bedroom ceiling. David and Morgan undertook home-improvement projects together, such as taking down wallpaper, painting, and installing drywall. Morgan later moved out of the house, and David filed for divorce. At trial, the court held that in part because of Morgan’s personal efforts as a homemaker, the Springfield house was marital property.
