Facts
The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (the European Union Charter) contained certain privacy and data protections. The cases consolidated here each considered national legislation that permitted a country to retain all subscriber traffic and location data generally and indiscriminately for the general purposes of fighting crime. The laws were referred to the European Court of Justice to determine their validity under the European Union Charter.
