Tidik v. Ritsema
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan
938 F. Supp. 416 (1996)

- Written by Alex Ruskell, JD
Facts
Brad Tidik (plaintiff) sued Lisa Tidik for a divorce. Judge Richard Kaufman (defendant) presided at the trial granting the divorce. As part of his ruling, Judge Kaufman included a provision requiring Tidik to post a bond with each motion filed as a security against potential costs and sanctions. Judge Kaufman put this rule in place because of the numerous motions Tidik made during the course of his divorce proceedings. Tidik sued Judge Kaufman, and the court ruled that Judge Kaufman was immune from suit for his role in Tidik’s divorce. Tidik then filed an almost identical suit against Judge Kaufman. Judge Kaufman moved for an injunction prohibiting Tidik from filing any further motions regarding Tidik’s divorce proceedings.
