Vorchheimer v. School District of Philadelphia
United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
532 F.2d 880 (1976)
- Written by Darius Dehghan, JD
Facts
The School District of Philadelphia (the school district) (defendant) had two high schools that offered only college-preparatory courses. Central High School (Central) was restricted to males, and Girls High School (Girls) was restricted to females. The courses the two schools offered were of equal quality, such that Central and Girls were academically equivalent. Susan Vorchheimer (plaintiff) was denied admission to Central because she was a female. Subsequently, Vorchheimer brought suit, contending that the school district violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The district court ruled in favor of Vorchheimer. The school district appealed.
