Wiltz v. Barnhart
United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana
484 F. Supp. 2d 524 (2006)
- Written by Eric Miller, JD
Facts
Calvin Wiltz, III (plaintiff) sought treatment for migraine headaches and began receiving medication for them as a minor. Wiltz’s pain was such that he was often absent from school and work. Wiltz applied for childhood Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, alleging disability due to migraines, learning problems, sinusitis, and adjustment disorder. The application was initially denied. Later, another administrative hearing was held on the matter. By this time, Wiltz had turned 18. The administrative-law judge (ALJ) determined that Wiltz did not qualify for SSI benefits due to a lack of objective medical evidence of migraines. The ALJ also concluded that Wiltz still had the ability to find employment. Wiltz appealed the decision to federal district court.
