Facts
James Tyrone Woodson and three other defendants committed an armed robbery in North Carolina that resulted in the death of a cashier. Woodson and the others were convicted of first-degree murder. A North Carolina statute required a mandatory death sentence for those convicted of first-degree murder, and Woodson and the others were sentenced to death. The Supreme Court of North Carolina affirmed.
