Facts
World Chess US, Inc. (World Chess) (plaintiff) organized and ran live chess tournaments. World Chess sold tickets to its live tournaments and also livestreamed the tournaments on a subscription website. Chess24 (defendant) published on its own website real-time updates on players’ moves during one of World Chess’s tournaments. World Chess sued Chess24 and Chessgames Services LLC (defendant) for misappropriation of hot news and for breach of contract. World Chess moved for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction, seeking to prevent Chess24 from reporting on the tournament while the tournament was still ongoing.
