The Right to an Impartial Jury 

This lesson will address the right to an impartial jury, which the United States Supreme Court has deemed a fundamental component of a fair trial. See Schriro v. Summerlin, 542 U.S. 348 (2004). The Sixth Amendment provides that a criminal defendant – other than a juvenile not tried as an adult or a member of the military charged in court martial proceedings – has a right to a trial by an impartial jury for serious offenses.
