Firefighter’s Rule
Definition
A common-law rule that bars firefighters and police officers from bringing a tort claim for damages caused by the same conduct that created the need for the officer’s presence in an official capacity. The firefighter's rule has been abolished or otherwise limited in some jurisdictions. One version of the firefighter's rule limits a private landowner’s duty of care to a firefighter or police officer who enters the property in the exercise of his duties to the duty of care owed to a licensee.
