Facts
A Georgia statute criminalized abortion but made exceptions if a case involved risks to the pregnant woman’s health, fetal defects, or pregnancy resulting from rape. However, these noncriminal abortions were subject to several requirements, including hospital accreditation, the approval of the abortion by a hospital committee, and confirmation of the performing physician’s judgment by two additional licensed physicians after their own examinations. Additionally, the law required the woman seeking an abortion to be a resident of Georgia. These restrictions were challenged, and the lower court ruled the restrictions invalid on due-process grounds. The United States Supreme Court granted certiorari.
