The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is the primary statute used to prosecute computer crimes, also called cybercrimes. The act, known as CFAA, appears at § 1030 of Title 18.

CFAA delineates seven distinct crimes, as well as criminalizing attempts or conspiracies to commit any of its substantive offenses. The statute also creates a civil cause of action for compensatory damages and injunctive relief for victims of CFAA’s offenses.
