Doe I and Doe II (plaintiffs) were two students who had been targeted on a public message board with derogatory, defamatory, and threatening statements. The statements were posted by several anonymous users, including Doe 21 (defendant). Doe II filed a complaint alleging libel, among other issues. The students issued a subpoena to AT&T for information relating to the identity of Doe 21. Doe 21 submitted a motion to quash the subpoena.
