Let’s continue our discussion of interpretative canons regarding semantics, syntax, and grammar.

II. Noscitur a Sociis

The Latin maxim noscitur a sociis means it is known from its associates. It’s also called the associated-words canon. This canon provides that the meaning of ambiguous terms can be understood by examining other statutory terms associated with the ambiguous term. Words grouped together, especially as a list, should be given related meanings.
