Definition

A medical and psychological condition that describes the behavioral patterns and actions of individuals who are physically and emotionally abused by an intimate partner over a prolonged period of time. Depending on the jurisdiction, battered-spouse syndrome may be recognized as a mitigating circumstance or a defense to some crimes. Battered-spouse syndrome has also been called battered-woman syndrome and battered-wife syndrome.
