Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA)

Definition

A state law under which a donor of a gift to a minor can appoint a custodian who has a fiduciary duty to manage the assets for the minor in lieu of establishing a formal trust. Gifts under the UGMA are governed by state law rather than the terms of a private trust.
