Definition

Doctrine that protects a person who has already been granted certain rights from losing them due to subsequent changes. For example, vested-rights doctrine might protect a person who has won a legal judgment from losing those rights due to new legislation, or a property owner who has received a valid building permit from losing that right to zoning changes.
